February News- New Computer Virus – deadly

TODAY’S COMPUTER TOPICS

Computer Virus Update  (Please be very careful of this one it is one of the worst I have seen)

What is CryptoWall?

CryptoWall Decrypter or CryptoWall is a kind of unwanted application which can be installed on the target computers without asking permission. CryptoWall Decrypter installs on the system when downloading free software, nowadays most of freeware download websites are using shady download clients that offer installation of additional browser extensions with the chosen free program; thus, reckless free software downloading can easily end up in this program or other infections.  This ransomware can affect all versions of Windows incorporating Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.

What does it do?
When Crypto Wall is installed it will scan your computer for data files and encrypt them.   So you will see files are renamed with DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.TXT, DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.HTML and DECRYPT_INSTRUCTION.URL. The name on the web page refers to “CryptoWall decrypter” and the ransom is $1000 USD.

What does this mean ?  How do I get rid of it ?
This means that the structure and data within your files have been irrevocably changed, you will not be able to work with them, read them or see them, it is the same thing as losing them forever.   Removal – sorry I would only have a professional remove this virus.

How to protect your machine:
Make sure your restore is turned on.
Make sure you always backup your data and other files – make sure it is incremental backups as the virus can carry over to your backups.
Do not click on anything you are not 100% positive is safe.

COMPUTER TIPS

Ok let stay on the same subject of Virus removal.1: Make sure you have an antivirus program installed. (Avast)
2. Make sure you always keep your temporary files cleaned out. (ccleaner)
3. Make sure you have a malware removal program installed (Malwarebytes)
4. Most important Make sure when downloading programs it is legit, and watch every screen when downloading as the
program might ask to install additional software.

December Kill the Cable Bill

TODAY’S COMPUTER TOPICS

Kill the Cable Bill

Antenna
I recently read an article that best describes how to GET RID OF THAT HIGH cable bill  (full article)
In the article it describes how to use an antenna in your home.   Your thinking right, horrible picture no HD – wrong,  I personally have been using the Mohu flat indoor antenna.  I was very skeptical about this so I wanted to test it to see if it was any good.  Here’s what I get:  about 30 channels and yes I do get HD. Cost is one time around $30.00.  All from an indoor antenna, the down side to the one I am using is it is weather dependent.

I am looking into there outdoor antenna which can also go in the attic.

Streaming Device
If you want more choices to watch movies, stream music, get a device like the wii or xbox or choose from the multiple devices available (here’s a list) make sure to scroll down to bottom to see the list.   Here is the downside to using one of these devices – You have to pay for almost everything you watch i.e. Netflix, Hulu, some offer Pandora music and Youtube.  So there is just a box that allows you access to these services that you have to pay for.

Computer – Laptop  – Mini computer
There is one more way (which is what I use)…….You can connect you computer or laptop or see below mini computers directly to the tv and access anything you want, either thru a standard VGA port that you have to have on your tv or thru an HDMI port that you would have to have on your computer.  I have watched all the movies and shows that I want.
